Contact
by Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan's 'Contact' is a brilliant look into what would realistically happen if aliens were to make contact with us. Sagan's writing was wonderful- he took complex thoughts and ideas and distilled them into easy-to-digest information, and the fact that his science fiction was based on real-world ideas made it all the more exciting for me.
Ellie was a wonderfully flawed heroine, something that surprised me since early sci-fi (at least the books that I have read) has not had a great track record when it comes to creating three dimensional female characters. I also enjoyed the other characters, with the possible exception of Palmer Joss, who just seemed shoved into the narrative for faith vs. science reasons. I think religion vs. science is a fascinating topic, but the character of Joss, I believe, could have been much better.
I genuinely liked this book, even though it had a bit of a pacing issue, and I found it fascinating following Ellie's story and getting a peek into some theories of astrophysics, I only wish Sagan had written more fiction novels while he was still with us.
