If you read There, There, this book offers something of a multigenerational prequel, starting back at the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, and then switches midway into a sequel of the events of Orangeā€˜s first novel. It traces suffering and addiction from each generation to the next with so much empathy. A wonderful read.
