Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown by Maeve Kensington

3.5

I enjoyed this spice free fantasy fae romance! In this world, the fae are enslaved to humans due to a mysterious curse, unable to use their wings. While I enjoyed the mystery in the beginning, as a reader please be aware you won't have the answers by the end of this book. This is definitely a slowly unfolding lore with more to come in later books.

Adeline gives big Cinderella vibes here: sweet, stubborn and majorly downtrodden. I wish she had the opportunity to teach some certain people a lesson! She was dis-empowered here and I am hoping that will be changing in an upcoming book. I can tell that there are reasons that lots of things are being kept from her (and us) and want more details.

Kieran is a classic bad boy fae MMC: a smart mouth, protective, and hot. He is another reason I want to know more of the lore of this world, especially his personal history and the current state of fae. I can't say more without potential spoilers but give me that lore!

There is no spice in this book. For the genre you might expect it, but I don't see where it would have fit in plot wise and I respect that it wasn't just slapped in because it's usually done. There is plenty of yearning, some spicy thoughts, and a kiss and I think I read somewhere that the spice will escalate as the series continues which I am looking forward to!

Overall, I think this book could have been compressed a little and we could have been given some more lore before the minor cliffhanger ending, but I truly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
