The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict
adventurous
mysterious
medium-paced
- Strong character development? It's complicated
- Loveable characters? Yes
3.0
Went into this blindly, just knowing is was about the "Queens of Crime" (Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham and Nagio Marsh) solving a mystery and well it was that but it was also disappointing. The pace dragged on, the mystery got to be predictable and while I really enjoyed the POV of Dorothy, it would have been interesting if the other Queens had a POV so we could get to know them more (especially since I am just familiar with Christie).
What irked me the most is a major spoiler to the mystery so you've been warned before reading the rest....
What irked me the most was the fact the murder occurred because the women was sadly raped, got pregnant and then the killer wanted her to kill her baby so he killed her instead. While this is very tragic (and I am in no means trying to downplay the horribleness of any of these events happening to anyone) it has just been OVERDONE in mystery books the past decade and I am over it! I was hoping the mystery would be more like what we get when we read Christie or Sayers
Also, I would have appreciated Benedict included in her authors note that John was in fact her real son by Bill White (why am I having to goggle that after the fact?) Also I listened to the audiobook so maybe it is stated in the print version
