My French Whore by Gene Wilder

4.0

A lean, affecting story about love and war, with an expert's comic timing and a comic's appreciation for tragedy. The characterizations are a little thin, but the plot is tight. The World War I setting is also enjoyable, for a war setting anyway.

I couldn't help picturing Private Peachy as a slightly more put together version of Wilder's character in The Producers, but that didn't really hurt in the end.
