For a long time, I was leaning towards giving this book 4.5 stars, but something at the end—and I can't quite put my finger on what—let it down a bit. I did like the ending, though. I think it just moved a little too quickly and too definitively for me, and while it certainly fit the character, I still felt it lacked a little conviction.
I really liked the magic system though and the interaction of the characters. Glad we only got a glimpse of romance, lol. In some aspects it reminded me of Babel by R. F. Kuang. Overall I enjoyed the book and appreciated how it incorporated and adressed topics like religious indoctrination, misogyny, racism and classism into its' world.
