melicam 's review for:
Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven
by Bella Forrest
YA book on witches, warlocks, and magic but not my genre so take this review with a grain of salt.
It was an easy read but some moments I feel are overdone/not realistic, while other pieces seem kind of original. I know you shouldn't, but it's hard not to compare magic-related books like these to the Harry Potter series and how incredible the world-building was in the HP series.
This book is okay in my opinion. The positives would be: a)he pacing is quite quick which I like in books as it keeps the momentum going, and keeps the main characters on their toes of how they approach each challenge; b)some of the magic pieces seem unique (again try not to compare to HP); c) and the backstory of Harley's parents piqued my curiousity (but why her full name is given as the main title takes away from some of the shock factor) d) and the fact that Harley has 'blocks'.
I would be curious to know where they take the series since it's the first of 15 which means lots to explore and expand on, but I think it may be predictable and the romancy/teenage lusty parts are a bit too much for me. But again not my type of genre. Every now and then I don't mind dipping my toes into these kind of books for the relief-easy-to-read-escapism it offers, but not 15 times for this series.
I suspect if you like Twilight you'll like these books.
