Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
1.0

I had such high expectations for this book, considering that Rainbow Rowell (author of Fangirl) wrote it. But I'm not horrified or angry about it like the other 1-star reviewers of this book. I'm more disappointed.

Much of the anger and horror that the other readers expressed was towards Lincoln's reading of Beth's emails. I wasn't as upset about that as I was at the fact that the two protagonists didn't officially meet and talk to each other until the last 20 pages of the book. Thus, their romance felt rushed and unrealistic. The action was very slow-paced, and I will admit that there were points where I just skimmed and skipped entire pages (I don't think I needed to know about their Dorito preferences). There were too many side characters, which was distracting. The only saving grace was the character Jennifer (Beth's best friend) and her personal arc because she changes so much over time but we only get a mention of her "happy ending" at the end of the book. I wanted more from her.

Unlike my other 1-star reviews of books, I don't vehemently hate this book. It was just very dull and even uninteresting at times, and I think Rowell is much better at writing YA romances than adult romances. I don't like confining people to one category, but Attachments practically confirms it for me.
