The Curveball by Megan Cousins

5.0

Do you like contemporary romance novels? Do you like baseball? Do you want a book with chronic illness representation?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above, this book is for you! This book is a feminist love letter to the sport of baseball that will leave your heart warmed and full of fuzzies.

The book follows Penelope as she deals with the misogyny in her baseball-centered workplace and her new coworker Jake, a former star baseball pitcher. Penelope is such a lovely main character who takes her passion project and uses it to motivate herself and make the needed career adaptation that helps her separate herself from the boss at work making her life miserable. I love how she handled things and it realistically captured the experience of being a woman in a male-dominated world. While Penelope works towards her passion project, she's also dealing with PCOS secretly. Her struggles are all too relatable and the needed representation that many readers would benefit from.

As for Jake, he is the perfect example of golden retriever energy. I love how doting he is and how healthy his relationship with Penelope is. The communication between them is great and the dual POV allows us to see just how pure Jake's intentions are and how empathetic he is. Top tier boyfriend right there, folks. I love how the focus was on the friendship first and foremost and how they were each other's biggest fans from the very beginning.

Beyond the characters, this book is a fast read full of sweet moments that will leave you swooning. For those of you who need a little spice, this book isn't for you as it is a bit of a slow burn with only a few kisses featured. Regardless, it's a great book that all sporty contemporary romance readers should enjoy!

If you're looking for a sporty contemporary romance with a beautiful and healthy relationship, #ownvoices chronic illness representation, and lots of swoon-worthy moments, this is the book for you! I can't wait for the rest of this series! (And seriously, if anyone knows of a Jake in real life, please send him my way!)
