I did not like this one starting out, but I grew to be thoroughly charmed by the end of the book. The narrative voice and writing style was poetic and fresh (but to an extent that I frequently found myself wondering if this narrative or author would find themselves better suited to a different medium than a literary novel.)

The pace began slowly, and there is not much in the way of plot; the narrative centers around the coming-of-age of Evie and is very character driven—both in Evie’s character and her exploration of the characters in her community around her. The author does wonderfully at capturing the voice and feeling of a teenager facing the world and her future—and that was where most of the charm for me lay. I very much remember what it was to be a teenager trapped at home with emotionally difficult adults, and once I had gotten to know Evie and learned about her world, I very much felt I was there with her; I remembered that I once was her. Though it took me about halfway through the book to settle in and warm up to it, I soon felt like Evie was my little sister or a younger friend, and I found myself rooting for her and her future—and mine.
