I'm a fan of Emezi, so I don't read the blurb, I just read them when they come out. I was really excited about this book - Emezi has a unique experience with embodiment and I was so excited to see how that manifested in a romance genre. This let me down in that department, the sex scenes and erotic tone was a little flat. I also think the dialogue struggled a bit here. Trying to get a conversation to work between two people that do not exist  is hard and for me, this is a weak area of their writing.  

I respect how Emezi went for an unusual arc, they went for an unpolished romance and I like that  Emezi did something outside of my expectations here. (I didnt love it when it was happening tho).

I found it hard to connect to this one, the characters, their choices. The prose which Emezi has proven themselves to be very skilled in, fell flat when it should have been at its most impactful. 

I may reread and see how a feel when I know the plot twist.
