I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The characters weren't developed enough and the link between time periods wasn't explained well. Erin's struggles in the present were baffling and Alison's in the past were infuriating because of the injustice (which to be fair was captured well by the author). Some scenes were too graphic for me to read towards the end when the jailers were trying anything to get Alison to confess. The evil done by those men was sickening.
Graphic: Child abuse, Death, Torture
Minor: Fire/Fire injury
