Gates of Midnight by Barbara Hambly, D. Lynn Smith, Maggie Field

4.0

Gates of Midnight is fast paced and action packed. It has strong characters, a hard hitting story line, and visuals to impress. If you love thrilling graphic novels, this one is for you.

Boy, has it been a while since I've read a graphic novel. Throughout my teen years I went through a manga phase, fascinated by how illustrations and drawings could tell a story with only bits of dialogue. Gates of Midnight happens to be the first graphic novel I have picked in up in over 12 years, and it did not disappoint me. It really captivated me with the art, and the way simple conversations could be so complex and moving.

I loved the main character Raven, and how she was so bad ass, like Buffy, but still had realistic qualities to her. She didn't always win her fights. She suffered from PTSD from being a combat medic, and she was curious about everything. She was quite a strong, like-able character, and I can't wait to see what happens to her.

I enjoyed the action and mayhem in this issue. I was thrown in the thick of it and loved the plot involving another dimension, warriors, and gate keepers. The story had danger, murder, humor, and emotion. I'm already hooked and dying for the next issue!
