The Plays of Oscar Wilde by Oscar Wilde

3.0

Reading all of Wilde's plays was quite the challenge (especially the unfinished, one-act ones that definitely needed polishing.) What I can say about all these plays is that they are definitively Wilde-esque. And what I can say about Wilde is that he's not always my favorite. Sure, you have some clear standouts, like "Vera", "The Duchess of Padua", "Lady Windermere's Fan" and obviously "The Importance of Being Earnest." But, through it all, Wilde's insistence of ensuring that stories had no meaning but were simply beautiful was frustrating. So I suppose my problem with his plays was not how they were written, because they were all beautifully written, but with why they were written: aestheticism is, very simply, not my cup of tea. And no, it's not a tea I think I'll drink again soon, even if it's served in blue china... (that's an Oscar Wilde joke)
