96 Miles
by J.L. Esplin
I'm reading the middle grade fiction nominees for the 2001 Whitney Awards. This novel features the adventures of two brothers and another set of siblings as they travel 96 miles on Highway 318 in northern Nevada. It's a survivalist tale that takes place during a blackout when the tween brothers--Stew and John--are separated from their dad and from their possessions. They are in desperate need of water, food, and medicine. They encounter other people on the road with a variety of motives. I do think that some of the situations are scary enough that I would put this book at the level of older middle grade readers if not younger YA.
