On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton

2.0

Vivian is dedicated to turning her daughters into musical stars - a path she hopes will give Ruth, Esther, and Chloe stability and safety. Practicing with them nightly and hustling for connections with every free moment she can get, Vivian knows their luck is about to change.

And things are about to change, but not in the way Vivian has dreamed. Because her daughters aren’t little girls anymore, and they’re starting to have their own dreams.

Set in a small San Franciscan community in the 1950s, On the Rooftop touches on subjects of race, gentrification, intergenerational trauma, and family expectations.

While small, slow stories can provide an intimate setting for character examination, On the Rooftop fell short on plot and character depth for me. I really had to push myself to get to the finish line on this one, something that shouldn’t have been a tough feat at less than 300 pages.
