Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
3.0

3.5/5 stars (rounding down because of the terrible naming system for people's special abilities)

First, I was totally right about the brother being a spy for the mom. I didn't expect for it to come out this early in the series or at the time in the story that it did, but it still happened, so points for Han.

Our MC, Mare, is not very likeable at times - she's too quick to sacrifice others to save herself, which isn't super admirable - but I like her spirit. She's kind of like "f everything this is what I want" which is fun. I don't understand why she wouldn't just kill Evangeline in the final scene because like I said, it's not like she has some high regard for human life. Maybe it's just so that she has a formidable enemy (physically) going forward?

ALSO! I wondered why this book was like "fantasy meets the technology of the modern age" right up until we learned that Mare's abilities are connected to electricity. Did our author really alter the realities of her fictional world just to give the MC a more significant special ability? I think so.

Overall I liked this guy enough to read at least the next book in the series. Let's see how long it takes her and the older brother to kiss.
