The Tiger's Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera

DNFed at about 15%.

While not bad, I just didn’t care about the characters that much and nothing had really happened. I think some people will really like this, but I’m not one of them.

I have seen a lot of people with negative sentiments towards the book because they (basically) feel like the author is culturally appropriating aspects of Japanese, Chinese, and Mongolian cultures. To be fair, I’m as white as can be, so I’m no authority on cultural appropriation. However sometimes I do think people are just trying to be woke for the sake of wokeness, because people say they want diversity in their books (and to some degree they mean books written by bipoc, while in some cases they mean books that don’t just feature white people in European-inspired settings), but then when authors do give them that, they complain that it isn’t done correctly. I think it’s a very fine line to walk because you should obviously be respectful of other cultures, but (specifically in the fantasy genre) you’re also try to create new cultures. Idk, maybe I’m not making sense. I’m not even trying to defend this particular book, I barely even read any of it, I just think that some people are so focused on being woke that it goes into virtue signaling territory and that if those types of people continue to be vocal and get their way then we’ll miss out on some really good books (or other forms of media).
