A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

3.0

Entertaining. But i didn't give it five stars because it seems like the author wanted to give a female strength to the main character, but she didn't quite succeed. In the second half of the book and towards the end our main character relied heavily on her male counterpart, which really took away from her strength. I felt like it did a disservice to her character from the beginning of the book.

I also was a bit confused with the sexual tension and waiting throughout the book because we were supposed to feel all of this passion, but nothing ever happened. I don't expect there to be any kind of pornography, but I did expect to feel the passion that the author was telling us we were supposed to feel. Without even a marital consummation, how am I supposed to believe that they are passionately in love?

Also, it's a bit confusing to me as to why they are suddenly married. Our female main character had no idea that they were married until he told her, and then she just accepted it? And then a few days later, she accepts that she has a child? Like she just took it in stride, that makes no sense. As a reader, it happened very fast. I didn't believe it, and therefore I have no way of believing that our protagonist believed it either.

All in all, it was very entertaining. But I definitely had some issues with the storyline and plot of the book. Also, obviously, some issues with character development and consistency.
