The Secret History of Twin Peaks
by Mark Frost
It’s a good read, and definitely entertaining, but I would advise two things going into it: don’t expect a whole lot of explanation for what happens in Twin Peaks. Some of that is there, but there are also new mysteries and loose ends introduced (which isn’t entirely a bad thing). Secondly, the story is very fragmented in style so you definitely won’t get the traditional satisfaction of a novel’s arc. There are pieces of newspaper clippings, notes from “The Archivist,” uncovered letters, and other “lost” documents that all contribute to a weird sort of muddy history. All of it is very well-executed and thought out, but a clearly defined through-line is hard to grasp. Not to say there isn’t a general theme to the book (and I think it’s a good one), but I think in part because of its style, there’s not as much buildup or payoff as you might expect.
But still, if you love Twin Peaks, you kinda gotta read it.
