Boys Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky

Shiny exploitation and what I wish was all over the top terribleness surrounds El Campo. The pages are bright and very busy, suiting the wildness well. Sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes depressing. Sammie is an interesting, easy to root for protagonist- it’s somewhat difficult to read because the awkward “in-between” non-acceptance is so clearly communicated. There’s less horror than I was expecting, but the sense of something being wrong is still clear. I liked the book’s ending connection, as well as the background details.
