The Tale of Indigo and Cloud by Martha Wells

4.0

Damn, even knowing it was all going to end well, this was SO TENSE! It really kept me on the edge of my seat!

It was pretty cool to get a queen's perspective for once. This story deviated a little bit from the usual themes of Raksura books, focusing more on parenthood and the challenge of responsible rulership, but it still had a male character who had been emotionally abused! The focus on male abuse survivors is one thing I continually love about this series.

CW abuse discussion
Not only that but he's what in our society is considered a 'bad' victim: he doesn't complain of the abuse to his birth court because he's worried about inconveniencing them, he deceives a would-be rescuer about his motivations so as to get himself out of the abusive situation, and he's willing to go back to the abuse to make other people's lives easier. But the narrative still treats him sympathetically and his needs are centered.
