This was a very middle of the road book. The magic system seemed interesting but it relied heavily on “everyone knows how it works in this world so only minimal explanation is given”. The writing is ok, the characters are really interesting. But then the author talks about how they wanted to explore the Paris world fair and colonialism, and they….don’t. It’s just a backdrop for the plot. It’s mentioned slightly, but it’s not the main point of the book.
