Sian is a witch who, as research for a university paper, is exploring an alternate universe which is home to a destructive entity which has been making incursions on her own universe. In this strange place she meets a strange - but friendly and sexy - monster, and they are quickly infatuated with each other.
The novella raises so many questions that go unanswered, and it doesn't do itself any favors by making the alternate universe (and the monster) so very alien, made of stuff that continually changes. I found it difficult to visualize, especially when the text keeps reminding me there's this character whose colors, shape, texture, and number of eyes is different from one moment to the next.
But if you can suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the story, there's a lot to enjoy here: two very different people trying to understand each other and falling in love along the way. The writing is at its best when the two of them are figuring things out together. If the stakes weren't so high, if there weren't a sense that their actions might have brought doom upon Earth, this could be a really fun cozy romance.
