I read this book after reading the sequel series. While I don't regret the order I went in, I can see why you would want to read this series before Flamecaster. It does a great job of setting up the world and the characters.
Still, I think the reason I loved this book so much is because of the fact that I read the Flamecaster series first, not in spite of it. I loved seeing all the little details in this book that I knew would become important later down the line. I loved the characters of Han and Raisa and thought that they were fantastic in addition to knowing where they would end up.
I'll be honest: if I had read this book first before Flamecaster, I probably wouldn't love it as much. The story was slow, and while it had its twists, they were rather small until the end. I think its because I already knew this world and had grown fond of it that I didn't mind the pace so much.
I'm still looking forward to continuing this series and hope to finish it by the end of the year. Overall, not a bad way to start the year!
