The Last Song of Penelope by Claire North
4.0

4.5, the 0.5 being the pay-off of the lovely momentum of the last two books. Thinking back on it, I’m amazed that I had any reasonable expectation that the first book about Penelope’s saga would fit into a stand alone novel. I loved this series even more as it grew. Sometimes, the characterization of the Gods and the general humor was a little too coy and on the nose but even that aspect developed an endearing rhythm to the story over the course of its telling.

I loved Penelope’s approach to rulership and sisterhood. I enjoyed how they were contrasted against her cousins Helen and Clytemnestra’s own personal philosophies and stories. I’m still in awe at how North has managed to so productively reframe my thinking of them. I will particularly carry the idea of ‘Helen as the women who broke the world’ forward with me.

I’m afraid that my newly developed itch for Penelopiads will be a problem going forward. I pray to Athena that I can find work as good as Claire North’s novels to scratch it.
