House Harkonnen by Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson

5.0

Another epic tale set in the DUNE universe, this story continues the rise and beginnings of many crucial characters including Jessica, Kynes, Duncan, and Leto.

The story follows many different plotlines that ultimately serve to set the stage for the Dune. I found all of them to be unique, and even if the characters never crossed paths, each plot was interconnected with another. The Imperium continued to expand and opened up new worlds full of danger, betrayal, and tension.

The characters all fit their archetypes and many were complex when faced with tragedy and struggle. I found Jessica, Duncan, and the Vernius children to be the most complicated. This book also explored how the Beast earned his name, a plot that was a roller coaster of struggle and power.

Like the previous books in the series, much of the enjoyment here comes from the world-building. Everything is so intricate and immersive, the politics and plots truly intense. There are consequences and repercussions, most of which are driven by a characters need for power or survival.

I'm enjoying this series more and more, excited to see what comes next from this compelling universe.
