Speak: The Graphic Novel
by Laurie Halse Anderson
Wow. This is such a well-crafted and powerful book. I read the original novel in 9th grade, and even before I reread it a few years ago, it was a visceral and important reading experience that stayed with me. Even though it was published almost 20 years ago, the novel still holds up. And this graphic novel adaptation is an incredible work on its own. The art is gorgeous and expressive; it suits Melinda's narration and character incredibly well. Art and visual imagination play a big role in the story so the medium seems particularly appropriate. Also, the text has been edited and adapted really well - often when novels are adapted into comics/graphic novels, there is too much text or the editing feels choppy but here it works really well.
