Slasher-film aficionado Jade Daniels attempts to save her town of Proofrock, Idaho, from a murderous rampage that she's sure is about to occur -- or is she? Jade's not so much an unreliable narrator as a narrator ignored -- by townsfolk, authorities, her parents, and most of her teachers, save one: history teacher Mr. Holmes, to whom Jade submits a history of slashers, and how best to prepare for them, in the guise of extra credit papers. Stephen Graham Jones authors here another mix of human flaw and supernatural foreboding, and how the two come to intertwine though Jade's telling is the heart of this dark, meaningful horror novel in which it seems nothing is quite as horrible as humanity. The first of an apparent trilogy, I am happily along for the long, bloody ride.
