Another very solid entry in the Astro City universe - a close up look at some of the repeating heroes and much more satisfying than Victory, the last entry like that in the KBAC universe. This is because Victory was one more step on the 'these are Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman' just reskinned, which I think diminishes the real advantages Samaritan, Confessor and Winged Victory have as characters. Lovers Quarrel, by contrast, really is about Quarrel and Crackerjack, rather than trying to make it clear who their analogues might be.

The other advantage is that since KBAC is creator owned it runs in real time, and we can watch the heroes age, and change, and fall, and sometimes die in ways that we're not allowed to see in the Big Two. That gives the story real room to explore and threat to the characters. My only real problem is that reading about how Crackerjack is getting old reminds me that it's 20 years since I met the character. As he ages, so do I. Still, being reminded of the glow of cracking open the early issues of KBAC in my mid 20's is not a bad thing.

The backup tale about the hidden gorilla city resident who wants to become a rock and roll star is wonderful. It touches on a lot of the same things KBAC has done before about the fight of super-people to not get sucked into the super world - but it's a lot of fun and it has a gorilla in a tuxedo. Dude. Totally.
