Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes

5.0

It’s been a whole month since finishing this book and I still don’t know how to properly write a review on it. It’s always the books I love that I can’t seem to explain why, but I’ll do my best.

Barnes created such a creepy, claustrophobic atmosphere in this story. It truly felt like an inescapable danger at times that left me feeling panicked for characters I didn’t even really have that much of a connection to. The plot/suspense was so strong in this story that it took awhile before I noticed the characters didn’t do much for me - which makes it surprising that I enjoyed it so much since I am much more of a character-driven reader. So hopefully that tells you something about the story she has created here. One truly horrifying and engaging from start to end. And I had no idea where it was going to go and when the reveal did happen, I was stunned. I LOVED it.

The one thing I felt was “off” for me was the romance. It wasn’t a significant focus I would say but either way it felt unnecessary? It felt somewhat plugged into the story and just served as something to help Claire break some of her defenses because she keeps everyone at a distance. Though even if it was inserted for that reason I don’t think it did it all too effectively?? I don’t know. I just know it felt off with everything else going on here.

I do think this book would make a brilliant film or short TV series! It’s written in such a way that makes it easily imagined and maybe if it was ever brought to life I’d connect more to the characters in that format.
