This book is a Canadian fangirl's dream! (Well, at least it's one of mine...) [b:A Book of Spirits and Thieves|22571365|A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves, #1)|Morgan Rhodes|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1429026765s/22571365.jpg|42037808] is absolutely awesome because 2/3s of it is set in Toronto and it's a fantasy book with some high stakes.
This book features 3 narrators. Crys's sister Becca touches a book and goes into a coma and Crys has to find a way to help her. This involves her going into the past and uncovering the secrets of her parents. Farrell is in a secret society and is getting promoted. It brings up a lot of questions about his older brother's suicide and morality for Farrell, but will his curiosity win over his ethical questioning about the morality of this organization? And Maddox is the only one who can see Becca's spirit in Mytica. He is also the only one who can help her get home.
It was really cool to see how these point of views wove together. At first, when you start reading, you don't see how these 3 characters know each other but then it comes together and it's great to watch. She also creates another character, like Magnus in the [b:Falling Kingdoms|12954620|Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)|Morgan Rhodes|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1337026387s/12954620.jpg|18111704] series, whose moral compass is a little off balanced and it's interesting to watch that person struggle.
I also really liked seeing how this series weaves into the [b:Falling Kingdoms|12954620|Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)|Morgan Rhodes|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1337026387s/12954620.jpg|18111704] series. You get to meet the people involved in the myths that are told in Falling Kingdoms and I'm interested in seeing how that continues. I'm thinking of it more like a prequel to Falling Kingdoms, but I don't know if I'm totally right yet. I liked the characters, even though I was a little unimpressed with Becca, who is a bit predictable.
I think the best part for me was, as I said before, this book takes place mostly in Toronto. I was so thrilled that I could imagine everything that was described and all the Toronto metaphors used. (Can I make a petition for more books set in Toronto for all the Canadian book nerds out there?) I just wanted the chapters set in real life to continue forever.
If you are looking for a dramatic, semi-fantastical book set in Toronto, you might fall in love with this book. Highly recommend! Totally picking up the next book (I bought it before I was even done this book, that's how much I liked [b:A Book of Spirits and Thieves|22571365|A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves, #1)|Morgan Rhodes|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1429026765s/22571365.jpg|42037808])
