The reviews for this book and the writer are a bit harsh. Many readers complain that the writing is horrible and he uses vulgar language. Matt starts the book sharing that he is not a writer but he wanted to share his story. He sets the stage and one should not expect much.
I have to say that I was still engaged and entertained by Matt's writing (as much as one can be entertained by a story that everyone hopes does not become their own). I have read many poorly written books and this is definitely better than any of the following: I am Malala, Bossypants, Yes Please, Let's Pretend this Never Happened, Tough Shit: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good, Naked and Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me, just to name a few.
And as for the vulgar language - yes he says "Fuck" and "Shit" but you know what, the situation is shitty. And he was writing as he speaks. If you find that offensive then this is not the book for you. But really, why is it offensive if he says "This fucking sucks"? He is speaking the truth, and until you have walked in his shoes, there might not be a better phrase to describe it.
IMO I don't think the profanity was forced, it felt authentic to me and I don't think his lack of writing skills detract from the book. I would definitely recommend this book, however be aware that you will need a box of tissues.
