I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
4.5
challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad

my two favorite non-fiction books last year were educated (a brilliant memoir, highly recommend) and under the banner of heaven (john krakauer doesn’t miss) and i’m left with this thought after also finishing this book: what the FUCK is UP with mormons

I tend to not enjoy celebrity memoirs, but this one was truly an exception. Not only did I feel like I was peeking behind the curtain at the fucked up world of Hollywood/child acting, but Jennette's story is all the more fucked up when you add her mother into the mix. Is it possible to resent a woman you have never met and who is currently dead? Yes. Yes, it is.

This book was so disturbing in so many ways but made all the more so because I was an iCarly fan in my childhood. It honestly almost made me feel guilty for loving the show so much, thanks to the trauma it inflicted upon both Jennette and the other actors who were traumatized by Dan Schneider. I know this is not a realistic way to look at the situation, but I am so glad that Jennette felt comfortable sharing her life in this way.
