Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio Vargas

5.0

This book is Vargas's personal story, but he speaks out on behalf of others who do not have the platform to share their stories. Vargas delves into the inequity of the American immigration "system," that which is so broken, it would be false to call it a system at all. His journalistic nature remains throughout the novel, explaining term, organization, and introducing the names behind each of his encounters. His thoughts are presented thoroughly and honestly.

I would recommend this book for anyone curious about the life of an undocumented person and the hoops one must go through to "pass" as an American citizen. I believe anyone who reads this book will recognize the humanity of this issue and seek to approach a bipartisan way to allow these people to stay home. Lastly, I loved this book in that as a Filipino American, it was comforting reading words in Tagolog and sharing some of the same experiences.

Thank you, Jose Antonio, for sharing your story.
