Peak by Roland Smith
5.0
Look, no matter how you slice it, Peak relies heavily on privilege.
If I still have you after that comment, it’s still very much worth a read.
As someone who reads to explore the world I thoroughly enjoyed “experiencing” what it’s like on Everest. I also thoroughly enjoyed the humanity strummed in between each line.
There’s so many dualities in here that help your heart swell with pride and yearn for peace. Between a tumultuous father son relationship to the struggles between a human and their inner selves, there were plenty of ways to relate to the novel.
What I enjoyed best of all is that it is centered around storytelling. As a teacher, I have many ideas on how to implement this novel into my classroom. As a writer myself, I appreciated the nod to the art of storytelling, the focus on the craft, the effort to remind everyone that their stories truly can change the world.
