Ain't Burned All the Bright by Jason Reynolds
4.0

Poetry, gaffer tape, and a hell of a year combine to create a thoughtful, sober, and carefully hopeful piece of art that can easily be read in one sitting (though I personally would give it a few read-throughs, since it's well worth your time).
Griffin's art, all of which is done in the pages of moleskin notebooks using anything from ball-point pens to spray paint, is as gorgeous as it is evocative, pairing perfectly with Reynold's blunt and beautiful writing. The push and pull of art and poetry is balanced in the endless flow of three very long sentences, cut up and spaced out as Griffin saw fit. 2020 was a year of breathlessness. The feeling of panic and boredom. Of monotony and anxiety. Of violence and solitude. Ain't Burned All the Bright showcases that and more, reminding us that while those horrors don't stop existing if we ignore them, we can still find our own kind of solace in the darkest places.
