The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo
5.0

This story begins in 1930s Malaysia with a series of mysterious, gruesome, and animalistic deaths. With a Chinese superstition about man-eating tigers and men who turn into tigers at the center, The Night Tiger follows two narratives: Ji Lin, a young dressmaker’s apprentice and dance hall girl, and Ren, an 11-year old house boy still grieving the loss of his twin brother.

This. Was. Amazing. I loved the writing, the atmosphere, the world-building, the complex social implications of the time, and the sweet little drops of Chinese folklore and Confucianism scattered throughout. The whole thing felt mystical and beautiful. I especially loved Ren’s storyline, which broke my heart and endeared me to him all at the same time. The magical realism element of this novel was amazing, and when magical realism is done well it’s the best thing ever. This book plays with the ideas of rivalry, forbidden love, invisibility and ghost stories. If you like historical fiction with hints of the paranormal, you’ll love it. I promise.
