The Revelation of Light and Dark by Sawyer Bennett

Did not finish book. Stopped at 30%.
I really tried to get into this book but I was simultaneously bored and irritated and until the 30% nothing interesting really happens—and I say that even after our FMC meets the MMC and "discovers" the truth about fae, daemons, etc. Some points:
  • Every little thing—from every character's appearance to the colour and make of the FMC's car, the food they eat, the clothes they wear, etc., is described in excessive detail. Not only does it bog down the story but it is also completely unnecessary and frankly, distracting. I ended up not being able to picture anything due to the excessive detail!
  • The author also does this with pronunciations in the book. It's so heavy-handed and not at all subtle the way she gets the characters to pronounce their names. I definitely appreciate the sentiment cos sometimes that's needed (I don't think it was needed here, lol) but it could've been kept to a glossary cos again, it takes away from the story and adds unnecessary details that kept taking me out of the story and slowed everything down.
  • The FMC is a tough, take-no-shit, independent character and for all that she's always "in her head" and unaware of the happenings and "what's hot" in modern society, I refuse to believe that she hasn't heard, at least in "pop culture" about fae, daemons, etc. Come on...
  • I didn't even make it far enough to get to the plot, if there was one, but I also wasn't interested in it by the time I reached this 30% mark. I stopped at this point where the FMC and MMC are talking and he was trying to explain the history of fallen angels, fae in the mortal world, and alternate dimensions, but the woman would hardly let him get a word in edgewise because she kept interrupting him even when she said she'd let him speak and it was so annoying. SO ANNOYING!
  • But the MMC is also incredibly stuffy and rude for absolutely no reason and it just wasn't endearing. Overall, this was pretty disappointing. I can hardly believe there's like more than 3 books in this series. It's painful to think about!
