A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow
5.0

This book is beyond and unlike anything I have ever read in my life. Giving Black People voices and mythology all in itself made me cry, made me rejoice with the representation and the beauty and the sheer absolute power in this writing. It’s a twisted, confusing, fantastical coming of age novel with so much more into it. Even thinking about the book now makes me want to cry. I didn’t know what an Eloko was before reading this, and you’ll be damn sure that I won’t forget. Not only the beautiful, haunting African mythology behind it, but what Bethany Morrow has created them to be. Beautiful, enticing, mystical creatures. I will dream about the sounds of bells that belong to them, a hauntingly beautiful wind chime. This is a book I will read over and over, I will devour every word of every page to reach the vivid and absolutely heart wrenching description of Effie finally changing. Finally becoming who she wanted and needed to be. Finally being herself. Watching her struggle with her unknown identity, and watching Tavia struggle with her known one, were both gut wrenching.

If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. My love for this book still makes my heart ache even after the last page.
