stinker0204 's review for:
Black Cake
by Charmaine Wilkerson
I was not sure what to expect going into the book. I didn't think the secrets would run so deep. I liked the development of Eleanor and what she had to deal with. Unfortunately, for me that was overshadowed with the different perspectives throughout the book. It was okay when it was Byron, Bennie, and her own, but in the later chapters the additional ones were confusing and honestly unnecessary. Also, there were way too many secrets for my liking. With the exclusion of Eleanor, going into the multitude of secrets of Bennie, Byron, and especially Mabel, it got confusing and convoluted. Besides that, showing what Eleanor went through all those years was sad, but beautifully developed. Seeing where her family is in the present was nice, especially with Bunny recognizing the children. I am, though, still wondering what happened to her mother, but I kind of liked the unanswered storyline. It allows the reader to come up with their own explanations. Despite my few grievances, I liked this book and would read more from this author.
