This book is about an American college president who accepts the position of ambassador to Germany in the 1930s. He travels there with his wife and two adult children, a son and a daughter. It is in large part based upon the diaries of the ambassador and his daughter and supplemented with additional material that provides background. Enough time has now passed so that information from what would have been secret sources is now available. All of this gives a very complete view of events, which is good. However, the events that are being presented were gruesome. It is an enlightening but difficult read.
