Year One by Nora Roberts

4.0

I'll be honest: I didn't think Nora Roberts had a book of this nature in her. Shame on me, because I'm now fully hooked - it took me a considerable part of the first few chapters (I almost turned away, embarrassingly enough) but then I was fully immersed. Those who have compared it to The Stand aren't wrong, but to leave it there is harmfully reductive. This story has so much to it: there are romance elements, magic elements, governmental elements, moral compass elements, loyalty elements, survival elements. . .and on and on and on. If anything, it veers a little bit into YA territory, but I think the author has done a great job of not firmly setting up shop there. There are definitely dark adult themes and it is definitely gritty and graphic at points. I'm attached to all of the characters: Max and Lena, Simon, Arlys, Fred, Eddie. . .the list goes on, and I'm here for all of them. I hurriedly purchased the second installment as SOON as I finished the first.
