Migrations
by Charlotte McConaghy
My poor heart. When I started this book, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, and now, I think it may be one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. McConaghy’s prose is just beautiful and it shines such an important light on human-induced climate change and the many ways in which humans impact nature. The commentary on rising temperatures and sea levels, environmental degradation and the destruction of essential habitats, and the interconnectedness of humans and animals, both in life and death, was so validating to read about in this novel. And while these themes are so dear to me, the emotional depth and complexity of this novel make for a phenomenal story, whether one is interested in the environment or not.
Migrations is a story about nature, but it is also an exploration of the human condition and all of the ebbs and flows of life. McConaghy’s characters struggle with love, grief, abandonment, self loathing and doubt, and through her writing, those feelings are connected so beautifully to the world around them. I wanted to live inside of this book. It was a heart-wrenching, thought-provoking story that explores the many ways in which humans continue to take from nature, but it leaves readers with the reminder that there are ways to give back and always more work to be done.
