Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

dark emotional tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

4. As I've seen someone else describe it, it's a story you don't like, but can't put down. A social justice book wrapped in an all-too-possible dystopian fiction package. I felt strung along just a little too long from explaining the story's mysteries to the point where you're not sure where certain lines fit together anymore. Still, there were a few moments that landed as extremely effective in portraying the absurdity of a society ruled by money, fear, and entertainment (sound familiar?). Good read, would recommend. (Audiobook, read by multiple narrators, but mostly by Shayna Smalls, who was fantastic.)
