The Godfather by Mario Puzo
4.0

What makes The Godfather a classic is its ability to deepen readers' understanding of the main themes without missing a beat. Its mass appeal is not limited to pure entertainment. The plot is exciting and largely unpredictable. Virtually all characters are well-developed, including those that appear in no more than a page. Although most characters are basically part of the same 'profession' (i.e. members of the Italian mafia), each one has a distinct personality that allows you to easily identify them when they appear again elsewhere in the book. You will feel that you know them enough to make sense of their actions and decisions. My only criticism is that some scenes were gratuitous and took up too much space without making significant contributions to the plot.
