joabroda 's review for:
Elric of Melniboné
by Michael Moorcock
adventurous
challenging
dark
slow-paced
The beginning of a large Epic Fantasy, in short book.
Elric, is a sickly albino who sits on the Ruby Throne and rules the Melniboné people on the Dragon Isle. Only constant medicine and magic keep him alive. Besides that, he is so unlike his predecessors (embracing reading and learning) that he feels unfit to rule the Melniboné people. His cousin Yrykoon agrees with Elrics assessment of himself, and plots to take the throne for himself . Adding to this, Elric is in love with Cymoril, Yrykoons sister. Fighting for his kingdom and love, Elric must quest for two blades, Stormbringer and Mournbalde.
My only complaint was there was not enough mention and interaction with the Dragons. I hope that changes in the books to come. This book was written in 1972 and has held up well. It is not for everyone, only those who love high-dark fantasy.
