why was this book so good in the first half, and so disappointing in the second?

at first, i was really pulled into the story, the universe, and the characters. but as i kept on reading, i couldn't help but noticing just how insufferable the mc was. he drove me crazy with how entitled and prejudiced and pompous he was. such a character could be interesting if they were to grow throughout the story, but this one didn't. he kept on being obtuse and opinionated at the expense of the other characters, who didn't have any backbone at all (come on grimm, wake up and stand for yourself).

this book could have been a five stars read, but it wasn't, and i'm actually so sad about it :(
