Gabriel Garcia Marquez's vivid prose is the star of the show here. Colombia is rendered with intense personality and color. It is so easy to sink into the world the character's inhabit. Marquez takes his time going through the entire lives of the main characters that makes the payoff of the ending and the building of the themes hit firmly. There are a few dated aspects to the story that put me off occasionally. I was definitely surprised when I saw it was published in 1985. Regardless, the story is deeply considered and moving that I can look past the flaws and allow myself to be taken away by the story.
