The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

Through poetry and prose
I was tossed and twisted back
Into the world of a budding poet
Back into the world of
The teenage desire and urge
to grow
to explore
to discover the highs and lows
Of life
But most importantly, to break free from
The constraints of parental expectations

Acevedo ebbs and flows her prose
To match the distinct
Hills of emotions we all feel.
And while her words are aimed
To extract the emotions of adolescents
It was easy to relate, be inspired, be engulfed in her words and become fully immersed in her intentions.

She sheds light on more
than a girl coming of age.

This book is layered beyond the cat calls and unwanted attention from prying men.
It goes beyond discovering who you are.

It perpetuates the desire to understand.

Acevedo brings power and encouragement to break those generational rhythms of trauma and gives hope to heal the wounds of past.

There’s a reason why she has won so many awards for this novel. Each medal is well deserved and speaks so much volume to the power of her words.
